Cool Hand Luke (1967, Prison, Rural, Chain Gang, Rehabilitation, Paul Newman, Adaptation)
PLOT: Paul Newman delivers what is arguably his most memorable performance as Luke, a war hero turned convict who refuses to conform to the prison's idea of rehabilitation. His refusal to be broken by the system inspires his fellow convicts to follow his lead. Author Donn Pearce wrote the character to be 28-years-old in the book, but Newman, who was 42 at the time, gives the character a sensibility that can only come with age. AUTHOR: Donn Pearce
